Tales from Ladakh: First day in Ladakh

Delhi to Ladakh again:
Our flight is scheduled at 10 AM from Delhi to Leh. We had breakfast @ hotel and started to airport at around 8AM. We reached our departure gate @ T3 terminal by 9AM and came to know that our flight got delayed. Finally after waiting for 2 hours, we boarded the flight. I selected the window seat, so that I can capture the aerial beauty of ladakh. After one hour of flight, we were able to see the dusty and snow capped mountains. This time the sky was so clear and pilot announced that we are going to land in leh airport within 10 minutes. Once we landed in ladakh, everyone was sooooo excited, started clapping and shouting in joy.
Airport to Hotel:
Everyone was so happy after watching the beautiful mountains around the airport and everyone had a feeling that whether the flight landed in India or some other country. When I first came out of the flight, i feel like I'm in heaven and that was one of my happiest moments in my life. We came out and boarded the shuttle bus to reach the terminal. The airport was too small, with just some basic facilities. Once we enter the airport there are many information boards about the altitude sickness, leh history, places of interest in leh. We collected our baggage and went to our car in parking. our hotel is just 10 minutes away from the airport. The first glimpse of Ladakh was stunning.

Hotel Khasdan, Leh:
Once we reached the hotel khasdan, makemytrip manager came to us and explained about the plan, safety and also answered all our question about the trip. He told us not to do any strenuous exercises, no smoking, no drinking, no heavy food for the first day. Also he asked us to take diamox tablet for the first 2-3 days, so that we wont get effected with AMS (acute mountain sickness). He told that for the first 2-3 days, we may get mild fever and sore throat because of the sudden change on climate and altitude. As we are 7 persons, they allocated three rooms, which are very clean and good.

Immediately after checked in to our rooms, we took diamox tablet and went for lunch. After lunch, we thought of taking rest for some time and then go to leh market for shopping. As our hotel is located away from the leh market, there was no noise around and we were unable to sleep because of that silence. Also I felt some difficulty in breathing, because of the altitude.

First Day Shopping:
Leh market is just 2km from out Hotel. Leh market area has so many shops and you will find anything in the market. We spent almost 3 hours in the market and bought gloves, thermals, caps, jerkins. Also we bought ladakh shirts, which are worth buying. The view of Leh palace from the market was amazing.

Views from Hotel:
We reached hotel @around 6PM and came to know that it was a full moon day. So we went to the terrace of the hotel to take some pictures of full moon. View of moon rising from the beautiful mountains was superb and moon looked soo big. Seems like we came closer to the moon.

In the evening post dinner, we discussed about our next day plan. As we are going to Khardungla pass (18000ft) next day, we packed all the tablets, food in case of any emergency, thermals, cold creams. I explained everyone about the precautions we need to take on khardungla, nubra valley trip and asked everyone to take one diamox in the morning to avoid AMS.

Stay tuned for the next post on "Khardungla & Nubra Valley".....
